Support Justice for Digital Creators and Tech Users

Par : Aaron Jue
6 août 2024 à 03:25

People work at EFF because they believe in wringing justice from a world that’s often unfair. For us, setting things right means legal work, activism, convincing policymakers, and creating tech tools to tip the balance of power back toward you. Will you move that mission forward by supporting EFF?

Support Digital Creators and Tech Users

This week, many EFFers will head to the Las Vegas hacker conferences—BSidesLV, Black Hat USA, and DEF CON—to rally behind researchers and tinkerers. EFF gives legal advice to folks like them all year because computer security has always relied on skilled hackers, and your privacy and free expression rely on strong web security. Check our conference Deeplinks post to get a full rundown of EFF's presentations and activities in Las Vegas.

For Justice

EFF's member t-shirt design for this year's DEF CON is inspired by the 11th card of the tarot: Justice. It can be challenging, and it can be slow. But that comes with the territory when your goal is truth and integrity. Your choices have meaningful consequences, so I hope you will support a better future for your privacy and free expression today.

Support EFF’s work at the Gold membership level and (for a short time!) you can choose EFF’s DEF CON 32 t-shirt design with some dazzling glow-in-the-dark details. The path to Justice will lead you to this year’s puzzle challenge, too! Donate today or even set up an easy automatic monthly donation. Help EFF spread the word about this “Virtual Vegas” membership week! Here’s some language you can use to share with friends:

EFF at the Las Vegas Hacker Conferences

6 août 2024 à 03:25

Las Vegas is blazing hot and that means it's time for EFF to return to the hacker summer camp conferences—BSidesLV, Black Hat USA and DEF CON—to rally behind computer security researchers and tinkerers. EFF is glad to support members of this community all year long. Computer security has always relied on skilled hackers, and your privacy and free expression rely on strong web security. Below you will find all of EFF's scheduled talks and activities at the conferences.

As in past years, EFF staff attorneys will be present to help support speakers and attendees. If you have legal concerns regarding an upcoming talk or sensitive infosec research that you are conducting at any time, please email info@eff.org. Outline the basic issues and we will do our best to connect you with the resources you need. Read more about EFF's work defending, offering legal counsel, and publicly advocating for technologists on our Coders' Rights Project page.

EFF staff members will be on hand in the expo areas of all three conferences. You may encounter us in the wild elsewhere, but we hope you stop by the EFF tables to talk to us about the latest in online rights, get on our action alert list, or become an EFF member. We'll also have our limited-edition DEF CON 32 member t-shirts on hand starting Friday or snag yours online today! This year’s DEF CON member t-shirt is inspired by the 11th card of the tarot. The path to Justice will lead you to this year’s puzzle challenge—give it a try!

DEF CON Keynote: Disenshittify or die! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification.
Join this DEF CON keynote address with author and EFF Special Advisor Cory Doctorow. The enshittification of the internet wasn't inevitable. The old, good internet gave way to the enshitternet because we let our bosses enshittify it. We took away the constraints of competition, regulation, interop and tech worker power, and so when our bosses yanked on the big enshittification lever in the c-suite, it started to budge further and further, toward total enshittification. A new, good internet is possible - and necessary - and it needs you.

Craig Newmark Philanthropies Matches EFF's Monthly Donors

Par : Aaron Jue
4 juillet 2024 à 14:30

Craig Newmark Philanthropies will match up to $30,000 for your entire first year as a new monthly or annual EFF Sustaining Donor! Many thanks to Craig Newmark—founder of craigslist and a persistent supporter of digital freedom— for making this possible. This generous matching challenge bolsters celebrations for EFF's 34th anniversary on July 10 as well as EFF's ongoing summer membership drive: be a member for as little as $20 and get rare gifts featuring The Encryptids (including a Bigfoot enamel pin!).

Bigfoot with glasses in a forest saying "Privacy is a 'human' right!"

Since its founding in 1990, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has relied on member support to power its public interest legal work, advocacy, and technology development. To wit, more than half of EFF's funding comes from small dollar donors around the world, and EFF's community of monthly and annual Sustaining Donors play a crucial role in keeping the organization running strong. Sustaining Donors giving $10 or less each month raised over $400,000 for EFF last year. Every member and every cent counts. This free donation matching offer from Craig Newmark Philanthropies takes EFF supporters' donations even further at a time when many households are especially conscious of their finances.

Sustaining Donors giving $10 or less each month raised over $400,000 for EFF last year. Every member and every cent counts.

Over the past several years, grants from Craig Newmark Philanthropies have focused on supporting trustworthy journalism to defend our democracy and hold the powerful accountable, as well as cybersecurity to protect consumers and journalists alike from malware and other dangers online. With over 30 years of donor support from Newmark, EFF built networks to help defend against disinformation warfare, fought online harassment, strengthened ethical journalism, and researched state-sponsored malware, cyber-mercenaries, and consumer spyware. EFF’s Threat Lab conducts research on surveillance technologies used to target journalists, communities, activists, and individuals. For example, EFF helped co-found, and continues to provide leadership to the Coalition Against Stalkerware. EFF also created and updated tools to educate and train working and student journalists alike to keep themselves safe from adversarial attacks. In addition to maintaining our popular Surveillance Self Defense guide, EFF scaled up the Report Back tool for student journalists, cybersecurity students, and grassroots volunteers to collaboratively study technology in society.

With this generous matching challenge from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, we are pleased to double the impact of our recurring Sustaining Donors and let all digital rights supporters know that we're in this together. EFF is deeply grateful to its passionate members and everyone who values a brighter future for privacy, security, and free expression.

Ah, Steamboat Willie. It’s been too long. 🐭

Par : Aaron Jue
18 juin 2024 à 11:31

Did you know Disney’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain this year? Since its 1928 debut, U.S. Congress has made multiple changes to copyright law, extending Disney’s ownership of this cultural icon for almost a century. A century.

Creativity should spark more creativity.

That’s not how intellectual property laws are supposed to work. In the United States, these laws were designed to give creators a financial incentive to contribute to science and culture. Then eventually the law makes this expression free for everyone to enjoy and build upon. Disney itself has reaped the abundant benefits of works in the public domain including Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid" and "The Snow Queen." Creativity should spark more creativity.

In that spirit, EFF presents to you this year’s EFF member t-shirt simply called “Fix Copyright":

Copyright Creativity is fun for the whole family.

The design references Steamboat Willie, but also tractor owners’ ongoing battle to repair their equipment despite threats from manufacturers like John Deere. These legal maneuvers are based on Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DMCA. In a recent appeals court brief, EFF and co-counsel Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati argued that Section 1201 chills free expression, impedes scientific research, and to top it off, is unenforceable because it’s too broad and violates the First Amendment. Ownership ain’t what it used to be, so let’s make it better.

We need you! Get behind this mission and support EFF's work as a member. Through EFF's 34th anniversary on July 10:

You can help cut through the BS and make the world a little brighter—whether online or off.

P

eople say I'm the most famous of The Encryptids, but sometimes I don't want the spotlight. They all want a piece of me: exes, ad trackers, scammers, even the government. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but my digital profile is worth cash (to skeezy data brokers). I can’t hit a city block without being captured by doorbell cameras, CCTV, license plate readers, and a maze of street-level surveillance. It can make you want to give up on privacy altogether. Honey, no. Why should you have to hole up in some dank, busted forest for freedom and respect? You don’t.

Privacy isn't about hiding. It's about revealing what you want to who you want on your terms. It's your basic right to dignity.

Privacy isn't about hiding...It's your basic right to dignity.

A wise EFF technologist once told me, “Nothing makes you a ghost online.” So what we need is control, sweetie! You're not on your own! EFF worked for decades to set legal precedents for us, to push for good policy, fight crap policy, and create tools so you can be more private and secure on the web RIGHT NOW. They even have whole ass guides that help people around the world protect themselves online. For free!

I know a few things about strangers up in your business, leaked photos, and wanting to live in peace. Your rights and freedoms are too important to leave them up to tech companies and politicians. This world is a better place for having people like the lawyers, activists, and techs at EFF.

Screen Printing 101: EFF's Spring Speakeasy at Babylon Burning

At least twice each year, we invite current EFF members to gather with fellow internet freedom supporters and to meet the people behind your favorite digital civil liberties organization. For this year’s Bay Area based members, we had the opportunity to take over Babylon Burning’s screen printing shop in San Francisco, where Mike Lynch and his team bring EFF art(work) to life.

Babylon Burning Front of Building

To kick off the evening we had EFF’s Director of Member Engagement Aaron Jue, talk about the near-20-year friendship between EFF and Babylon Burning, the shop that has printed everything from t-shirts to hoodies to hats, and now tote bags. At EFF, we love the opportunity to support a local business and have a great partnership at the same time. When we send our artwork to Mike and his staff, we know it is in good hands.

EFF Shirt Archive

Following Aaron, EFF’s Creative Director Hugh D’Andrade dived into some of EFF’s most popular works such as the NSA Spying Eagle and the many versions of the EFF Liberty Mecha. The EFF NSA Spying Eagle focuses on mass surveillance found in the Hepting and Jewel cases. The EFF Liberty Mecha has been featured on four different occasions, most recently on a shirt for DEF CON 29, and highlights freedom, empowerment through technology, interoperability, and teamwork. More information about EFF’s member shirts can be found in our blog and in our shop.

Mike Lynch at Babylon Burning

Mike jumped in after Hugh to walk members though a hands-on demonstration of traditional screen printing. Members printed tote bags, toured the Babylon Burning print shop, and mingled with EFF staff and local supporters.

Thank you to everyone that attended this year’s Spring Members’ Speakeasy and continue to support EFF as a member. Your support allows our engineers, lawyers, and skilled advocates to tend the path for technology users, and to nurture your rights to privacy, expression, and innovation online.
